- Really gives a sense of adventure
- Lots of zany characters
- Great music

[PC] Atlantis: The Lost Tales (1997)

How:

Read about it on Adventuregamers, got on GOG during a promo.

Note:
I played the "extended cut" version, which is an unofficial patch that fixes some bugs and adds back some unused music and dialogue.

Pros:
- Just the old school graphics I like
- Great atmospheric music
- Lots of cutscenes

Cons:
- Lots of bugs and glitches, even with the patch installed
- Annoying action scenes to complete via trial & error
- Unfair, obscure puzzles

At one point you dress up like a woman, and the character even makes a falsetto voice.

[Amiga] Curse of Enchantia (1992)

How:
Heard about it since Amiga times.

Pros:
- Nice graphics and smooth animations
- Silly humor

Cons:
- No dialogues
- Very illogical puzzles
- Cumbersome gameplay with unclear actions, mostly trial and error
- Too many red herrings
- No item descriptions, sometimes it's difficult to understand the graphics

Trapped in a coffin. Actually, asking for help doesn't help.

Got all golden statues again!

[PC] Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within (1995)

How:
Heard of it since Amiga times, got on GOG during a Halloween sale.
Pros:
- Relaxing gameplay, nice mysterious atmosphere
- Good acting with authentic German speakers
- Some nice puzzles
Cons:
- Many puzzles are just a matter of going back and forth talking to people
- Overly slow cutscenes
- Extremely tedious arcade sequences
- No subtitles
- Some aggravating pixel hunting
- Handwritten letters have keyboard-specific typos, completely ruins immersion

Ending scene, with my tiny 679/679 score in the top-right.

[PC] Call of Cthulhu: Prisoner of Ice (1995)

How:
Read about it on magazines, got on a Black Friday sale at GOG.
Pros:
- Nice tense atmosphere throughout the entire game
- Old school graphics, with pre-rendered 3D animations and drawn backgrounds
- Some nice cutscenes
Cons:
- I skipped a cutscene because I did actions in a different order
- The monsters are laughable
- Very easy puzzles
- Rushed-up unfolding of the story, weak characters

The Necronomicon!
I found the first part of the code via trial and error. This broke some parts of the game.

[PS3] Life is Strange (2015)

How:
Found by randomly browsing PSN, bought the season pass on a sale.
Pros:
- Very good graphics contribute to setting the mood
- Very fitting, moving soundtrack
- Great storyline and characters
- Several choices make for a very nonlinear game
Cons:
- Gives a misleading sense of urgency that doesn't allow to calmly explore
- Impossible to backtrack and visit locations as desired
- Camera handling can be a bit tedious
- Some distracting graphical glitches
- Gameplay is often just limited to watching the story unfold

[PC] Gobliins 2 - The Prince Buffoon (1992)

How:
Heard of it since Amiga times, got on GOG with a Gobliiins pack.

[PC] Neighbours from Hell (2003)

How:
Found about it on GOG.
Pros:
- Nice tense puzzle solving; if this was horror-themed, it would be very effective
- The episodic format enables quick game sessions
- Reasonably funny and lighthearted
Cons:
- Once all tricks are found, getting 100% rating boils down to finding out the exact sequence

I got the golden statue in all seasons, but no outro video for me.

[PC] Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar (1985)

How:
Got it for free on GOG.
Notes:
I solved the game almost entirely on my own, except for the dungeon maps.
I never found and used the silver horn to bypass the 100 daemons guarding the shrine of humility. I instead fought all of them.
Pros:
- Heavily dialogue-based, makes exploration interesting and rewarding
- Some convenient interface changes, also easier and quicker fights
- You can ask people to join the party
- Very non-linear
- Battles take place in several different environments, allowing for some strategy
- Food depletes slowly, is shared within the party, and is not a hassle anymore
- Finally, enemies have no diagonal movement (still diagonal attack though)
Cons:
- No music in the original PC version
- Combat can be very slow when many characters are involved
- Getting a ship is still a pain in the ass
- Ships can be destroyed even when parked, forcing you to find another one
- Wind when sailing is still a HUGE pain in the ass
My final character stats.
Only 91,682 turns!

An Indiana Jones reference!
Encounters on bridges involve trolls. Nice touch!
Gazers - another type of beholders (strictly speaking these are all called "beholderkin").

[PC] Ultima III: Exodus (2012 VGA upgrade) (1983)

How:
Got with a Ultima I+II+III sale at GOG.
Pros:
- Finally with music!
- The tactical turn-based combat adds a new dimension to the series
- More items and weapons than the predecessors
- Magic is an important and fun part
- Not a grindfest for the most part
- Dungeon crawling is actually fun and useful
Cons:
- Still no diagonal movement / attack (although the enemies can)
- Wind in the world map is super annoying and makes you waste frigate turns for no reason at all
- The 5s timer for turns is very stressful, especially during combat
- Monsters are not visible in the dungeons, they just attack out of nowhere
- Food is a real pain, and can be drained (unfairly) by invisible gremlins in the dungeons
- Boats spawn very infrequently
- Still a lot to grind

I managed to teleport without boat into the water.
The disappointing ending with my final party.

How:
Got on GOG during a Halloween sale.
Pros:
- Good puzzles, not too easy
- Very nice graphics and animations
- Cool, captivating story
- Very good voice-overs
Cons:
- Music is not very fitting most of the times
- Some frustrating pixel hunting

My final score. I forgot reading the newspaper once.

[PC] Call of Cthulhu: Shadow of the Comet (1993)

How:
Read about it on Hardcoregaming101, bought it on GOG during a winter sale.
Pros:
- Cool creepy atmosphere and story
- Some nice puzzles
- Very nice graphics
Cons
- Spooky but very repetitive music
- Unintuitive interface, sometimes you must Use items, sometimes you just need to have them in your hands in the right place at the right time
- Easy to lose bearings in town, and understand which locations are accessible
- Slow dialogues
- Possible dead-ends
- Too much trial-and-error towards the end

The game comes with a separate mini-game called "Lovecraft Museum".

How:
Got as a birthday present from my brother, via GOG.com.
Pros:
- Good voice-overs in general
- Fitting music
- Immersive and atmospheric
- Some nice puzzles
Cons:
- Several graphical glitches and game-breaking bugs
- Several audio glitches, such as music/voice imbalance during cut-scenes, broken loops, and broken fade-outs
- Speech can be interrupted only by pressing the space bar
- Camera movements are confusing and make you mess up constantly
- Some frustrating timed sequences
- Very repetitive setting

[PC] Sanitarium (1998)

How:
Played the demo when it came out, finally bought it during Halloween sales at GOG.com.
Pros:
- Cool isometric view
- Nice music fitting well the creepy mood
- Plenty of cut-scenes
- Engaging story with a slowly unraveling mystery
Cons:
- Some game-breaking bugs and crashes
- Puzzles tend to be sparse and easy, they mostly serve to move the story along
- Lack of dialogue continuity; the character reacts to dialogue in a fixed manner even if he already has the information he needs

[C64] Warrior of Ras 1: Dunzhin (1983)

How:
Read about it from CRPGAddict.
Pros:
- Sound effects and victory music
- Some replay value (levels and events are random)
- Reaction-based traps add to the overall enjoyment
- Random dungeons reveal as you explore, which adds to the pleasure of discovery
- Nice tactical combat, in which you can choose whether to aim, force, attack, run, or hide. Attack is specific for different body parts and you have to learn the most sensitive/exposed body parts for each enemy.
Cons:
- No music during the game
- Winning or losing a battle is completely a matter of luck, as a result fights are an exercise in frustration
- The weapon and armor can break with no possible replacement
- Unnecessarily complex control system which requires you to specify how many steps to walk in which direction
- Buggy (or just awkward) player status, in which experience points and statistics fluctuate randomly
- Very high encounter rate

[PC] Tex Murphy: Under a Killing Moon (1994)

How:
Had the title in my head since forever, found and got it from GOG.com.
Pros:
- Cool sci-fi / noir atmosphere
- An interesting unfolding story of conspiracy and mystery
- Some nice puzzles, including optional ones
- Amusing dialogue system, where you get to choose a "way" of saying things rather than the specific sentence
Cons:
- The sloggy movements make me feel nauseous after a while
- The game takes a while to kick off (at least the entire Day 1)
- Commands can get frustrating, especially adjusting the motion speed with the mouse
- Basically the first 3 days take place in the same few locations
- A few time-based puzzles

An amusing Alien reference. The little beast here is referred to as a "geigger".

[PC] Fahrenheit (2005)

How:
Heard about it on Adventuregamers.com, and got at a Holiday sale on GOG.com.
Pros:
- Excellent voice acting and dialogues
- Well worth playing just for the story and the cinematic presentation; keeps you in front of the screen to see how the story unfolds
- Excellent animations
- Great original score by Angelo Badalamenti
- Cool multiple character interaction
- Some truly memorable sequences (e.g. the hypnotization sequence with Agatha)
- Some nice, dynamic, and well animated sequences (e.g. basketball one-on-one match, fighting on a ring, bugs attack)
Cons:
- Frustratingly irritating controls and camera movements
- Some very annoying arcade sequences
- Almost no puzzles at all
- One reaction sequence actually requires you to NOT do it correctly (interrogation scene in the office), but I only found out by reading a walkthrough after finishing the game
- Timed dialogue system is just annoying and gives you no time to ponder about choices; a true pity one cannot explore the whole dialogue tree
- Cannot explore all dialogue options, and some of them are ambiguous; picking the right or most informative answer is mostly chance

[PC] Space Quest V: The Next Mutation (1993)

How:
Got with the Activision Quests sale at GOG.com.
Pros:
- Music and sound effects are much better than the previous episodes, and a pleasure to hear
- Very good graphics and animations
- Gameplay is relaxing and offers some variety. Even just sitting in the spaceship giving orders is fun and rewarding.
- You visit several locations
- Interesting, slowly unfolding story
- Cool comic-style cutscenes
- Nice puzzles
- Fewer dead ends and sudden deaths make the game much more enjoyable
- Cool climatic ending
Cons:
- You spend very limited time in each location

Alien references are my favorite!

[PC] Space Quest IV: Roger Wilco and the Time Rippers (CD-ROM version) (1992)

How:
Got with the Activision Quests sale at GOG.com.
Pros:
- Very nice graphics and animations, the best of the series so far (as much as I love EGA)
- Amusing idea of time-traveling across the previous and future episodes of the game
Cons:
- The high-pitched music can get quite annoying
- Cannot have voice and subtitles at the same time, had to play with no voiceover
- Two out of five possible actions have no use whatsoever
- Several frustrating trial-and-error arcade sequences
- Not many puzzles and not many locations to visit, the story just drives along on its own

You can visit SQIII if you input the correct code - which I did on my first random code trial!
My final score. This time I didn't play the Astro Chicken game in the arcade.
